SecureWater, Film & Photographic Exhibition

The UN designated 2003 the International Year of Freshwater. To mark this event and in the run-up to the World Water Forum held in Japan in March of that year, WPP commissioned Wild Dog production to produce a film – SecureWater – detailing linkages between water, livelihoods and poverty in three countries. The film was financed by the former Sustainable Livelihoods Support Office of DFID.

From 25th February to 10th March 2003, WPP screened the film as part of a photo exhibition at the OXO Gallery, South Bank, London, to raise public awareness of the challenges facing poor people in securing access to water and sanitation in Asia and Africa.

All photographs at the exhibition were taken by Andy Johnstone during production of the film. You can view here some of the photos exhibited.

Using discussions with poor households, community leaders and key interveners in a mixture of urban and rural settings, the film highlights the nature of the challenges facing poor people, yet provides positive images of communities trying to improve water their access to water and sanitation in support of their livelihoods.

As 2005-2015 has been designated the International Decade For Action: Water for Life the film's contents remain as relevant as ever, particularly through underscoring the very localised nature of water security and poverty issues in Asia and Africa.
